Pottery experience
SHORT INCA TRAIL
The pottery experience is another option in Cusco city where you will know a bit more about how the pottery was developed by the Incas and how this knowledge survives in our city nowadays and shared with the tourists by the local people. In this activity you will meet Julio Gutierrez, an award-winning artisan. He has a workshop in cusco city and he will share his knowledge and the process of how to make pottery. For sure you will have time to decorate your own piece of ceramic and take it home as a souvenir for years to keep. The purpose of this experience is sharing this knowledge with you and more people in order to know how this work was part of the Inca civilization and how this work was changing and adding new things that develop the work of the Peruvian artisans.
itinerary
We pick you up from your hotel and we drive to the Julio Gutierrez workshop which is only 15 minutes from the center and the whole activity will take us about 2 hours. Afterwards, you will have a go at the pottery wheel itself. Surprisingly, it will be a lot harder than it looks to create a symmetrical piece! The process usually continues with firing the clay to get it to harden. However, as this does take some time, we will have some already fired pottery available for you to continue with. Select a bull or horse figurine and paint it as you wish. At this point it is time to part with our hand-painted pieces which will remain at the workshop to dry. You will be able to pick it up 2 days later if you wish. On a side note, throughout the class we will have refreshments and little snacks available.
